Oahu, Hawaii

Hawaii

Oahu

Surf, hike, yoga — eight days on a single island that has all three.

Eight days on Oahu split between the polished pace of Waikiki and the wilder North Shore. Three big hikes, daily surf at the level you choose, sunrise yoga on the beach. No inter-island flights, no rushing.

Day 1 — Arrive Waikiki

Afternoon

Land HNL, check in to Waikiki

Rest

Skip the Strip resorts — try The Surfjack or a small Diamond Head-side condo. Walk the beach barefoot once you've dropped bags.

Evening

Sunset at Magic Island

Rest

A 20-minute walk from Waikiki Beach toward Diamond Head. Locals' picnic spot, no crowds, great pink sky.

Day 2 — First surf, first hike

Morning

Surf at Queen's Beach

Movement

The mellow Waikiki break, perfect for getting back into the water. Hawaiian Fire Surf School, or just rent a foam board near the pier.

Afternoon

Poke lunch at Off The Hook

Food

Spicy ahi, ahi shoyu, salmon — order the deluxe bowl, eat outside. Nap if needed.

Evening

Diamond Head at golden hour

Movement

1.5 km up, panorama at the top, sunset coming through the gun ports of the old WW2 bunker. Sixty minutes round-trip.

Day 3 — East-side sunrise and beach

Morning

Lanikai Pillbox sunrise

Movement

Drive 25 minutes east. Be at the trailhead by 05:30. Steep but short. The light over the Mokulua islands is the pay-off.

Afternoon

Beach day at Lanikai

Rest

The best beach on the island — postcard turquoise water. Order acai bowls from Kalapawai Market beforehand.

Evening

Dinner in Kailua

Food

Buzz's Original Steakhouse for the throwback experience. Old-Hawaii vibe, good burgers, mai tais.

Day 4 — Manoa Falls and town

Morning

Manoa Falls hike

Movement

Lush rainforest trail in central Oahu. Thirty minutes uphill, a 45-meter waterfall at the end. Buggy — bring repellent.

Afternoon

Lunch in Kaimuki

Food

Town by Ed Kenney or Mud Hen Water — chef-driven, locally sourced, a different Hawaii from the resorts.

Evening

Drive to North Shore

Movement

Hour and a half on H2 then 99. Check in at Turtle Bay or a small rental in Pupukea.

Day 5 — North Shore surf, slowly

Morning

Surf at Chun's Reef or Pupukea

Movement

In summer, the North Shore goes flat and the breaks here are mellow. In winter, watch from the beach — these waves are for pros only.

Afternoon

Lunch at Haleiwa Beach House

Food

Open-air, garlic shrimp from Giovanni's truck nearby, shaved ice from Matsumoto.

Evening

Sunset Beach walk

Rest

A long sandy stretch from Banzai Pipeline north. Walk barefoot, watch the surfers if there's swell.

Day 6 — Yoga and snorkel

Morning

Sunrise yoga at the beach

Movement

Many studios on the North Shore offer 7 AM beach classes. Try North Shore Yoga or Yoga Loft.

Afternoon

Snorkel at Sharks Cove

Movement

Tide pools full of fish. Calm in summer; do not enter in winter.

Evening

Food trucks at Kahuku

Food

Taro burgers, garlic shrimp, banana lumpia. The food trucks at Kahuku are an institution. Eat outside, sun setting behind you.

Day 7 — Last North Shore day

Morning

Run from Sunset to Pipeline

Movement

Soft sand, 4 km out and back, no shade after 09:00. Go early.

Afternoon

Beach reading at Waimea Bay

Rest

Iconic crescent of sand. Calm in summer, world-class waves in winter.

Evening

Drive back to Waikiki

Rest

Ninety minutes of empty highway. Order pizza from somewhere on Kalakaua, in pyjamas by 21:00.

Day 8 — Last hike, depart

Morning

Koko Head Crater Trail

Movement

1,048 railroad-tie steps to the summit. Twenty-five minutes up. Sweat at the top, panoramic 360°.

Afternoon

Lunch in Kailua, then HNL

Food

Boots & Kimo's banana pancakes if there's time before security.
